Dead motels who? Let’s talk dead drive-in restaurants.
Sandy's was a chain of drive-ins that Illinois and got up to well over 100 locations. It existed from 1958 until 1979, eventually merging with Hardees and becoming defunct. Pictured is the Topeka, Kansas location that now operates as a cigar shop.
Another well known chain was called the Pig Stand. The first one opened in 1922 in Dallas, and there were once locations throughout Texas - including the famous Calder Avenue location in Beaumont (pictured) which closed in 2006 and demolished in 2018.
I’ve also included a then/now shot of an original A&W drive-in restaurant and what has become of many A&W’s in the 21st century. While the chain still exists, many of its architecturally unique restaurants have been abandoned.
